Question 73847: A line passing through the origin has slope -3. Determine the value of a, if the line is to contain the point (a, -1).

for a slope of -3 the fraction is -3/1 this means for every for every -3 y valus the x value is 1.
-3/1=-1/x now cross multiply & we get
-3x=-1
x=-1/-3
x=1/3 for the corresponding point to a y value of -1.
(1/3,-1) is the answer.
