Another way of writing this equation is:

As you can see, the denominator of both of the fractions is the same. So, we can get rid of the denominators of these fractions and rewrite this equation as
2y = 4
To find out what y is, we have to get y all by itself on the left side of the equal sign. To do this, we have to do the opposite of what is being done on the left side of the equal sign. On the left side of the equal sign, 2 is being multiplied by y. So, to get y by itself, we must do the opposite of that to BOTH sides of the equal sign. Division is the opposite of multiplication, so divide both sides of the equal sign by 2:

The 2 in the numerator and the 2 in the denominator, because they are the same number, cancel each other out, so on the left side of the equal sign, we are left with y. Now, just divide the right side of the equal sign: 4/2 = 2. This leaves us with our final answer
FINAL ANSWER: y = 2
Hope this helps!

I'll assume that it's , with the y in the numerator. You need to use parentheses!!

Since both have the same denominator, we simply set the numerators equal to each other and solve, as follows:

2y = 4

y = , or

A check shows that is indeed

Is on the bottom or the top of the fraction ?
If it's on the top, you have:

----------------
The rule is: Whatever you do to one side of the
equals sign, you must do to the other side, and the
equation will still be true.
----------------
First multiply both sides by
Then what you have is:

Divide both sides by

answer
===================
Now if the is on the bottom of the fraction,
Multiply both sides by also

Now multiply both sides by

Divide both sides by

Hope this helps
