Question 631988: (11 1/6) + 2 7/9 -4
Adding and subtracting mixed numbers (like/unlike)
please show me the steps to solving this thanks

Answer by Theo(13342)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
your expression is:
(11 1/6) + (2 7/9) - 4
this is equivalent to:
(11 + 1/6) + (2 + 7/9) - 4
this is equivalent to:
11 + (1/6) + 2 + (7/9) - 4
combine like terms to get:
9 + 1/6 + 7/9
the + 11 and the + 2 and the - 4 were common (they were all integers) and so they were combined together to equal 9.
in order to add fractions, you have to get a common denominator for them.
the least common denominator for (1/6) and (7/9) is 18.
multiply (1/6) by (3/3) and multiply (7/9) by (2/2) to get:
9 + (3/18) + (14/18)
combine the fractions together now that they have a common denominator to get:
9 + (17/18)
that's your answer in mixed fraction form.
