I assume you mean: 3 5/11 + 3/22
.
3 5/11 = 11/11 * 3 + 11/11 * 5/11 = 33/11 + 5/11 = 38/11
.
Note that I just multiplied by 1, disguised as 11/11.

The other factor is 3/22, so the common denominator is 22.

38/11 * 2/2 = 76/22
.
76/22 + 3/22 = 79/22
.
79/22 = 3 13/22

Another approach is similar to cross-multiplying.

With two fractions a/b + c/d you can add them like this: (a*d+b*c)/(b*d)
