You can rewrite this as:
Now change the 5 to the equivalent improper fraction of then do the subtraction.
= Now change this improper fraction back to a mixed number.
= 4 5/8 That's 4 and 5/8

Remember, every whole number is a fraction with one as the denominator, so we have;

Now you need LCD;
So leave the first fraction as it is, and lets make the second fraction with a denominator of 8;

Now we can subtract the numerators;
