Question 342974: a negative fraction is what I need help with. the question is 2/3+(-1/4). I got 1/12. I added 2 to -1 and got 1. Then the common denominatior is 12, right? The back of my mathbook says the answer is 5/12. I am confused.

You need to get a common denominator before you can add/subtract the numerators.
