Most equations with fractions are easier to work with and solve when you eliminate the fractions at the start. To eliminate the fractions, look at all the denominators (on both sides) and figure out the lowest common denominator (LCD) just like you were going to add the fractions (even though we will not be adding them). Then multiply both sides of the equation by the LCD and watch what happens.

In your equation the denominators are 3k and 4k. The LCD of 3k and 4k is 12k. So we will multiply both sides by 12k:

We use the distributive property to multiply on the left side:

When multiplying on the left, the entire denominator of each term will end up canceling out resulting in no fractions!

The rest is easy.

Divide by 12.

You can check this solution by substituting 7/12 for k in the original equation.

When what is the value of ?

Write as so everything will be
a fraction.

Put parentheses around all the terms on both sides:

, so write as ,
then multiply through by

Cancel:

All that's left is:

Divide both sides by
