Let x = the amount that Kevin has. Since Kevin has 50p less than Kirsty, Kirsty must have 50p more than Kevin or (x+50), and the sum of these two amounts is 5 pounds or 500p, so you can write the equation to find x.
(x+50)+x = 500p Simplify.
2x+50 = 500 Subtract 50 from both sides.
2x = 450 Finally, divide both sides by 2.
x = 225p.
Kevin has 2 pounds, 25p.
Kirsty has 2 pounds, 75p.
