2 7/8 must be converted to an improper fraction thus:
2=16/8+7/8=23/8
1/4+(2*8+7)/8
1/4+(16+7)/8
1/4+23/8
in order to combine fractions they must have the same denominator.
1/2=2/8+23/8=25/8
(1*2+23)/8
(2+23)/8
25/8 or 3 1/8
2) 12 1/16 + 2 3/32
12=12*16/16=192/6+1/16=193/16
2=2*32/32=64/32+3/32=67/32
(12*16+1)/16+(2*32+3)/32
(192+1)/16+(64+3)/32
193/16+67/32
193/16=193*2/32=388/32
(193*2+67*1)/32
(386+67)/32=453/32
453/32 or 14 5/32
3) 4 2/3 - 1 1/4
4=12/3+2/3=14/3
-1=-4/4-1/4=-5/4
(4*3+2)/3-(1*4+1)/4
(12+2)/3-(4+1)/4
14/3-5/4
(14*4-5*3)/(4*3)
(56-15)/12
41/12 or 3 5/12
4) 17 - 15/16
17=17*16/16=272/16-15/16=257/16
