It's not clear whether he spent 1/3 of the $45 on gas and 1/5 of what he had left on flowers or whether he spent 1/3 of $45 on gas and 1/5 of $45 on flowers. We'll do it both ways:
1/3 of $45 =$15 ((1/3)*$45=$45/3=$15)
1/5 of $45= $9
Total Spent=$24
He has left: $45-$24=$21
Or
1/3 of $45=$15 and he has $45-$15=$30 left
1/5 of $30=$6
Total spent=$15+$6=$21
He has left $45-$21=$24
