7182 were killed in last night's frost.
this was 2 and 5/8 as many as the night before.
how many roses were killed the night before.
---
let x = number of roses killed the night before.
then:
7182 = 2 and 5/8 times x.
---
since 2 = 16/8, this is the same as:
7182 = 21/8 * x
multiply both sides of this equation by 8 to get:
7182 * 8 = 21 * x
divide both sides of this equation by 21 to get:
x = 7182 * 8 / 21
---
this makes x = 2736 which means 2736 were killed the night before.
---
go back to your original problem statement.
7182 roses were killed last night.
this is 2 and 5/8 times the number killed the night before.
the number killed the night before is 2736.
2 and 5/8 times 2736 = 2.625 times 2736 = 7182

First, convert to an improper fraction.

Step 1: Take the denominator 8 and multiply it by the whole number 2 to get

Step 2: Now add the result 16 to the numerator 5 to get . This result is the new numerator. The denominator stays the same.

So the mixed fraction converts to the improper fraction . In other words, . If converting fractions doesn't make sense, I'd suggest studying it more (also feel free to ask me further).

-------------------------------------------------------------

Now let x=# of roses killed the night before

Since "this was as many as the night before" (which also means "this was as many as the night before"), we can say

What's going on here is that we're taking the # of roses from the night before (which is x) and multiplying it by (which is also ) to get 7182

Multiply both sides by 8

Multiply

Divide both sides by 21 to isolate "x"

Divide

So the answer is which means that 2,736 roses were killed the night before
