Question 150880: Fractor each of the following; x^2+x-6 and 3x^2+11x+10 ,I know how to fractor things like x^2+8x+4 but I dont really understand how to fractor x^2+x-6 or 3x^2+11x+10, could someone please explain it to me?
Answer by mangopeeler07(462)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
1. x^2+x-6
Since this has a + and a -, then you set it up like this:
(x+)(x-)
Factors of 6 whose difference is 1: 3 and 2
The higher number (3) will go in the (x+), since the x term is positive.
(x+3)(x-2)

2.3x^2+11x+10
Since this has two +'s, you set it up like this:
(3x+)(x+)
Since 3 is prime, it has to be 3x and x. Then the other two numbers must be so that one number times 3x + the other number times x equals 11x.
Those number would be 2 and 5, but how do you put them into (3x+)(x+)?
(3x+2)(x+5) foils out to 3x^2+17x+10, so it's not that way. so it's:
(3x+5)(x+2)
