Question 13126: I am a mom who is trying to help my 11th grade daughter with her algebra. I remember a while back there being a way to get rid of fractions in an algebra problem but can't for the life of me remember how now. The problem we are trying to figure out is: 9/2(x+3)=27
For some reason I want to put the problem like this to rid the fraction:
9/2 (x/2+3/2)=27/2 I then would do the following but answer not working:
18(2x+6)=54
36x+108=54
36x+108-108=54-108
36x=-54
36x/36=-54/36
x=1.5
I know this isn't right because when I tried to plug it into the equation it didn't work. Could someone please tell me what I am doing wrong to rid problems of fractions?

9/2(x+3)=27 Hi mom.Deal with the bracket first.
Look at left side as
9times(x+3)=9x+27.This is all over 2.You now have:
9x+27/2 =27 Multiply both sides by 2
9x+27=54 Subtract 27 from both sides
9x=27 Divide both sides by 9
x=27/9
x=3
Plug into original to check 9/2 X 3+3 = 27
4.5 X 6 does =27
