Hi
Question States:
Let s represent the speed prior to 4mph after 3hr

The total time spent sailing was 6hr NOte: 3hr at each speed
The entire distance sailed was 60mi
How far did the ship travel in the first 3 h?
'2nd' 3 hrs... D = 4mpn(3hr) = 12mi
48mi - 12mi = 48mi, How far the ship travel in the first 3hrs

After a ship had been on the water for 3 h, a change in the wind direction reduced the average speed of the boat by 4 mph. The entire distance sailed was 60 mi. The total time spent sailing was 6 h. How far did the ship travel in the first 3 h?
______Mi?
She's WRONG! Distance traveled in 1st 3 hours is NOT 48 miles

Let distance traveled in 1st 3 hours be D
Then distance traveled in 2nd 3 hours = 60 - D
Average speed during 1st 3 hours:
Average speed during 2nd 3 hours:
We then get the following SPEED equation:
                                         D - 12 = 60 - D ---- Multiplying by LCD, 3
                                          D + D = 60 + 12
                                             2D = 72
  Distance traveled in 1st 3 hours, or

.

Is in this problem  " the "ship "  the same as  " the boat " ?

A well-intentioned attentive reader might be confused as you use different names for the same thing.

3 hours at the first speed and a total of 6 hours means 3 hours at the second speed.

x = first speed
x-4 = second speed
3(x) = distance covered at first speed
3(x-4) = distance covered at second speed

The total distance was 60 miles:

3(x)+3(x-4) = 60
3x+3x-12 = 60
6x-12 = 60
6x = 72
x = 12

ANSWER: Distance covered at first speed = 3x = 3(12) = 36 miles
