This means Kyle had 18 candies before he gave the last 10 to Ben.
"Jen ate 1/2 of the candies and gave the rest to Kyle."
Since we know Kyle had 18 candies, that means Jen had 36 candies before eating half and giving the rest to Kyle.
The question is, "How many candies did Jen eat?" From above, we know the answer is 18. We can stop here.
