It is very probable that the second term on the left is and not .
But you will get better help with your questions if you make sure you present them clearly, using parentheses where appropriate: -1/8+(9/2)y=-7/4.
Solving is going to be much easier if you don't have to deal with all the fractions, as the other tutor did. So the first thing I would do is multiply the whole equation by the LCD, which is 8:
