Question 1098703: 1. √50 + √72
2. One of the roots of X^2-X-1=0 is:
3. Simplify: x+x/y
________
x-x/y
4. Simplify: 3x/y+2
_______
x/y-2

The first is sqrt (25)*sqrt(2)+sqrt(36)*sqrt(2)
=5 sqrt(2)+6 sqrt(2)=11 sqrt(2)
Do these by adding the square roots of the same number.
--------------------
x^2-x-1=0
x=(1/2)(1+/- sqrt(1+4)
one root is (1/2)( 1+ sqrt(5)); the other is (1/2)(1-sqrt(5))

-------------------
x+(x/y)=(xy+x)/y=x(y+1)/y
x-(x/y) is (xy-x)/y or x(x-1)/y
------------------
3x/y +2
(3x+2y)/y
------
if that is 3x/(y+2), it can't be simplified further.
------------------
if this is (x/y)-2, then it is (x-2y)/y; if it is x/(y-2), it can't be simplified.
