Start with the given mixed number

Multiply the denominator 3 by the whole number 1 (ignore the negative sign) to get 3

. Add 3 to the numerator 1 to get 4. This final result is the new numerator

Place the new numerator over the same denominator. Now place the negative back in.

So the mixed number is equivalent to the improper fraction
