Question 1074131: Doris uses 8 squares of fabric to make one scarf. Each side of a square piece of fabric uses 1/4 yard in length. Doris can buy large pieces of fabric that are 1/4 yard long and 2 yards wide. How many large pieces of fabric should she buy to make 7 scarves. Show your work.
I tried 8x7=56 1/4 yard pieces then 56x1/4=14 then 14 divided by 2 = 7 large pieces but something doesn't look right. Please help.

I agree that 56 square pieces of fabric are needed. However, as I got to the end, I realized that the calculation was not necessary. Towards the end of the story we find that Doris buys large pieces of fabric that she can cut into 8 squares, so after multiplying times 8, we divide by 8 to find she needs to buy 7 of those large pieces of fabric.
The way I understand it, the square pieces used to make the scarves measure yard wide by yard long, and Doris can buy large pieces of fabric that are yard by yards.
Each of those large pieces will give her square scarf pieces
(2 yards divided by 1/4 yard is 8 squares).
That is exactly what Doris needs to make one scarf.
So each large, yard by yards piece of fabric Doris buys will be enough material for one scarf.
For 7 scarves she needs to buy 7 of those large pieces of fabric.
