a) What fraction played the game?
b) What fraction didn't play the game?

Answer by Theo(13342)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
2/5 * 4/4 = 8/20
1/4 * 5/5 = 5/20

2/5 + 1/4 = 8/20 + 5/20 = 13/20

that's how many played a game (either football or volleyball but not both).
7/20 played neither (1 - 13/20 = 20/20 - 13/20 = 7/20).
the assumption here is that nobody played both.
each person either played football only or played volleyball only or didn't play either one.

assume 20 people were there.
8 played football.
5 played volleyball.
7 didn't play at all.
total is 20 people total.
8/20 = 2/5.
5/20 = 1/4.
7/20 can't be simplified any further.
