In order to add/subrtact fractions you need to have the same denominator.
The denominator of the first fraction

can be factored into

If I multiply the numerator and denominator of the second fraction by (x+1), then I can subtract.

Subtract numerators, same denominator.
Let's just look at the numerator now. Remember the denominator is
NUM= FOIL method (First, Outer, Inner, Last)
NUM= Simplify.
NUM= Distributive property.
NUM= Group like terms
NUM= Distributive property.
Now let's bring back the denominator
Final answer.
