It would be between -3 and -2 (-3 is on the left, -2 is to the right)

It is closer to -2 than it is to -3. To do this accurately, split the interval from -3 to -2 in half, then split it in half again. The halfway point of the interval -2.5 to -2 is where -2.25 will go. Another way to see it is splitting the interval from -3 to -2 into 4 pieces. The number -2.25 will go on the quarter marker that's closest to -2 (but not on -2 itself).
