Question 712187: what is 3+(-5) on a number line
Answer by jim_thompson5910(35256) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Start at +3 on the number line. So you are 3 units to the right of 0.
Now move 5 units to the left of +3 to go to 2, 1, 0, -1, -2
You'll end up at -2 when you've taken your five steps.
So that's why 3 + (-5) = -2
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Another way to think of it is 3 + (-5) is 5 - 3 (big number - small number) and then you make the answer negative because the 5 (which is bigger) is negative.
So 5 - 3 = 2 , make this negative to get -2
So this is another way to find out that 3 + (-5) = -2
