Question 243139: Find the number that is exactly three-fifths of the way from 14 to 69 on the number line.
A. 47 B. 36 C. 33 D. 22 E. none of these

Answer by Theo(13342)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
69 - 14 = 55

all the way from 14 to 69 would be 55 units

3/5 of the way would be 3*55/5 = 3*11 = 33 units

14 + 33 = 47 units

47 should be 3/5 of the way to 69.

how would we figure?

47 - 14 = 33

69 - 1`4 = 55

33/55 = 3/5

to visualize this, take smaller numbers.

take 5 units away.

assume 10 to 15

that's 5 units away

3/5 * 5 = 3 units

that means that 10 + 3 = 13 would be 3/5 of the way to 15.

your units are:
                                       ***
              1/5 2/5 3/5 4/5 5/5
10
11 * * * * *
12 * * * *
13 * * *
14 * *
15 *

If you move 5 units you will be there.

If you move 3 units you will have moved 3 out of 5 which makes you 3/5 there.

your answer would be C.) which is 33 units.
