Question 206939: what does 1+1 mean on a number line?
Answer by Theo(13342)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
your number line has a center at 0.
going to the left you are subtracting numbers so your scale starts at 0 then goes to -1 then to -2 then to -3, etc.
going to the right you are adding numbers so your scale starts at 0 then goes to 1 then to 2 then to 3, etc.
-----
1 + 1 means you are at number 1 on the number line and then you go to the right one unit to end up at 2.
1 - 1 meanhs you are at number 1 on the number line and then you go to the left one unit to end up at 0.
-----
it's a way to visualize adding and subtracting.
adding a positive number is to the right.
subtracting a positive number is to the left.
adding a negative number is to the left (same as subtracting a positive number).
subtracting a negative number is to the right (same as adding a positive number).
