Question 1109417: Hello. I need help citing all possible solutions to this system, please. I'm stuck on that part. A detailed response would be greatly appreciated. I'm fine with setting the problem up and everything. I just don't know how to find all of the solutions

Equations:
r + c + j = 30
2r = 3c
j = c
------
Substitute for r and J ; solve for "c":
(3/2)c + c + c = 30
3.5c = 30
c = 8.57
-----
Note:: The # of country records must be a whole number.
There is no solution for your posted problem.

.
r + j + c + L = 30    (L -cLassical; the remaining notations are clear)

2r = 3c

j = L

================>

r + j +  + j = 30,

3r + 3j + 2r + 3j = 90

5r + 6j = 90

j =

You need to choose the "free" value of r in a way

    a)  r  is integer >= 0,   and

    b)    is  integer >= 0,   and

    c)   is integer >= 0.

Table

    r    j =(90-5r)/6    c =    L = j
---------------------------------------------------
    0      15              0          15
    6      10              4          10
    12      5              8           5
    18      0             12           0

Your answers are ALL listed in the table.

Another solution using a method very similar to that used by tutor ikleyn, but looking very different because of the particular path I followed.

Neither solution is better than the other; I'm just showing you that, with the given information, there are many different possible paths to the answer.

I used y for country and r, j, and c for rock, jazz, and classical.

(1) the total number of albums is 30
(2) twice the number of rock albums is equal to 3 times the number of country albums
(3) the numbers of classical and jazz albums are the same

We have enough information to get down to two variables, but not enough to get down to one variable. So the problem is likely to have multiple solutions.

Clearly we can substitute c for j, or the other way around.

Since 2r = 3y, I chose to double equation (1) so it contains the term "2r":

(4)

Now substitute 3y for 2r and c for j:

(5)

In this equation, we know y and c are whole numbers. We also know that, since 5y and 60 are multiples of 5, 4c must also be; that means c must be a multiple of 5.

So we can find all the solutions by letting c be whole numbers that are multiples of 5, starting with 0 and finishing when we start getting negative values for any of the variables.

(a) c = 0 --> j = 0; equation (5) gives us y = 12 and then equation (2) gives us r = 18.
(b) c = 5 --> j = 5; equation (5) gives us y = 8 and then equation (2) gives us r = 12.
(c) c = 10 --> j = 10; equation (5) gives us y = 4 and then equation (2) gives us r = 6.
(d) c = 15 --> j = 15; equation (5) gives us y = 0 and then equation (2) gives us r = 0.

Solutions:
(c,j,y,r) = (0,0,12,18)
(c,j,y,r) = (5,5,8,12)
(c,j,y,r) = (10,10,4,6)
(c,j,y,r) = (15,15,0,0)
