This is what I came up with.
y- 1 = 1/4 {x - 4}
y - 1 = 1/4x - 1
Answer is : y = 1/4 x + 1
I'm not sure if this is correct or not. I am so struggling with algebra. Thanks to all who help. I greatly appreciate it.

(We are trying to find my age (Alex) and the age of my friend (George). The follwoing are the clues):
I (Alex) have spoken to three people this morning.
If you multiply their ages by mine(Alex) you get 2,450.
If you add their ages you get double George's age.
One of the three people I talked to celebratd and important birthday that I celebrated 5 years ago.

When evaluating I have to solve for x
34 - 10x=6x+2
Here is my work:
34 - 10x=6x+2
34 - 10x + 10x=6x+2
2+34=6x+2
36=6x and from here I lost the pro
Also I have problems include letters this is really confusing
ex.
b +ax =c
ax = bx +c
ax - b = cx + d
The book I'm using is not really clear on the subject, "Algebra the easy wasy" 3rd edition

Question 5513: I do not understand how the book came up with this answer
here is the two equations they are similar however they have different numbers.
#(1) 3/(2x+1)-1/x = 2x/x(2x+1)
this is what I am doing
I am multilplying each side by the lcd which is [x(2x+1)]. I understand that there is some canceling out that's why the rightside of the equation is 2x, but how did they get the ans. 3x-(2x+1) for the leftside of the equation. what happens to the 1/X? I can't see how this answer came to be. Please help me. :)

x/3 - y/2 = -5/6
x/5 - y/3 = -3/5
This is what I did:
6*x/3 - 6*y/2 = 6*-5/6
2x - 3y = -5
15*x/3 - 15*y/3 = 15*-3/5
3x - 5y = -9
-3(2x - 3y) = -3*-5
-6x + 9y = 15
2(3x - 5y) = 2*-9
6x - 10y = -18
-6x + 9y = 15
6x - 10y = -18
-1y = -3
y = 3

for the first eq I substituted 3 for y to find x
x/3 - 3/2 = -56
6*x/3 - 6*3/2 = 6*-5/6
2x - 9 + 9 = -5 + 9
2x = 4
x = 2
TO TEST:
2/3 - 3/2 = -5/6
6*2/3 - 6*3/2 = 6*-5/6
4/3 - 9/2 = -5/6 (do you just subtract 9 from 4 and multiply the two denominators to get 6?)
(this is where I get stuck. Or is this how to test?)
2/5 - 1 = -3/5
(2/5 - 1/1 = -3/5)
(I think this tests right. I hope)
I can't figure out how to test this. I think I got the right answers for x and y, but I can't figure out how to test to see if they are correct. I tried, but it's not working out.
