Question 2754: I am studying for my 8th grade algebra final and i dont understand the way that on this linear system 4x+5y = 7
6x-2y = -18
how do i do this x = (7 -5y)/4
Substituting this expression into the second equation:
6(7+5y)/4-2y = -18
and from after that how do i simplify this 6(7+5y)/4-2y = -18
into this (-38)y = -114
I listen in class but i was absent on some very important days and this doesnt make sence
I thank anyone who could help.
GOD BLESS YOU ALL

Question 2810: Still having problem understanding how answer was arrived at: Can this be simplified:
Question: Find the equation of the line which passes through the point(-4,2) and is parallel to the verticle line x=5.
The parallel and verticle line x=5 is really thowing me off.
Answer by kiru_khandelwal(62): A vertical line means that any point which lies on that line x coordinate is the same and y coordinate varies
In our case the line ix x=5....this means all the points on the line will have x coordinate 5 and y will be variable
If a line is parallel to a vertical line it aslo needs to be vertical. Since this line passes thru (-4,2)...and as earlier said that all the points that lie on the vertical line has same x coordinate...so in this case the eqution will be x=-4

Question 3287: Hi again, Drglass. Thanks for responding so soon. Your examples are real clear and precise. I tried it and so the next numbers would have to be 52 and 79 using x for 7 and 11.
Theres also this nth term: an=26n-2-n for T and an=3n-2+n+1 for x
if you plugged in 3,7, and 11, it would come up the same. And together: 15n+1+3x+6n-6=T. Does this also make sense? I'm not so sure if it does. I'd appreciate your input. -Maria

Question 3417: When the integer n is divided by 17, the quotient is x and the remainder is 5. When n is divided by 23, the quotient is y and the remainder is 14. Which of the following is true?
(A) 23x + 17y =19
(B) 17x –23y = 9
(C) 17x +23y =19
(D) 14x + 5y = 6
(E) 5x – 14y = -6
