Question 986567: i am rusty...solving y and x intercepts....need help remembering procedure,,
find the x and y intercept the problem is: x/2 +y/7=1 these are meant to be fractions....do i first bring the 1 over to the left and make it a negative 1 and the answer becomes zero. Then I solve for y and x by making one of them zero. When I graph i will have two ordered pairs..can you help me with at least one, then I should be fine? thanks

.
For x intercept, y=0:
x-intercept: (2,0)
.
For y intercept, x=0:
y-intercept: (0,7)
.

The intercepts of any line, presuming the line is other than horizontal or vertical such that it has both
and
intercepts are two points: the
-intercept is of the form
and the
-intercept is of the form
.
Because the coefficients on your variables are both non-zero, you are guaranteed to have a line that intersects both axes. All that is left for you to do is to find the two intercept points by finding the values of
(so that you can create the point
) and
(so that you can create the point
).
To find the value
, substitute zero for
in your equation and then solve for
. The value of
when
is zero is the value
that you need for your
-intercept.
Likewise, to find the value of
, substitute zero for
and then solve for

My calculator said it, I believe it, that settles it
