Question 9390: using substitution method is x+y=4
x-y=5
independent,dependent,or inconsistent?

Answer by rapaljer(4671)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Solve for y:
x+y=4
y=4-x
Substitute into the second equation:
x-y=5
x-(4-x) = 5
x-4 +x = 5
2x - 4 = 5
2x = 9
x=9/2 or 4.5

y = 4-x
y = 4 - 4.5
y = -.5 or -1/2

Independent, since there is a unique solution.
