Question 897334: compute the slope of the line segment connecting the two points. interpert the meaning of the slope in each case
1:(d,-c)and(0,0)
2:(3,b)and(-10,b)
3:(a+b,c)and(a,c)
4:(-5,-5)and (5,5)
5:(-a,-b)and(a,-b)

slope is change in the value of y divided by change in the value of x.

the meaning of slope is that it is the ratio of the change in the value of y to the change in the value of x.

slope can be positive or negative.
if positive, then the graph of the line gets higher as you go from left to right.
if negative, then the graph of the line gets lower as you go from left to right.

number 1:

points are (d,-c) and (0,0)

slope is equal to (0 - (-c)) / (0 - d) which results in c/-d
if both c and d are positive, then this slope is negative and the line will be going down from left to right.

the assumption in all of this is that the letters represent positive numbers.
if there is a minus sign in front of the letter, that indicates a negative number.
that's my interpretation.
you could assume that each letter could represent a positive or a negative number but that gets real messy and probably too advanced for the level that you appear to be at.

number 2:

points are (3,b) and (-10,b)

slope is (b-b) / (-10 - 3) which results in 0/-13.
the slope is 0 so the line is horizontal.

number 3:

points are (a+b,c) and (a,c)

slope is (c - c) / (a - (a + b)) which results in 0 / b.
the slope is 0 so the line is horizontal.

number 4:

points are (-5,-5) and (5,5)
slope is (5 - (-5)) / (5 - (-5) which results in 10/10 which results in 1.
the slope is 1 which means that for every increase in the value of x, the value of y will increase by the same amount.

number 5:

points are (-a,-b) and (a,-b)
slope is (-b-(-b)) / (a-(-a)) which results in 0 / 2a which results in 0.
the line will be horizontal.
