Question 867020: an equation of the line that is perpendicular to 3X+6Y=12 and passes through the point (4,0)
Answer by mananth(16946)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
3 x + 6 y = 12
Find the slope of this line

6 y = -3 x + 12
Divide by 6
y = - 1/ 2 x + 2
Compare this equation with y=mx+b, m= slope & b= y intercept
slope m = - 1/2

The slope of a line perpendicular to the above line will be the negative reciprocal 2
Because m1*m2 =-1
The slope of the required line will be 2

m= 2 ,point ( 4 , 0 )
Find b by plugging the values of m & the point in
y=mx+b
0 = 8 + b
b= -8
m= 2
The required equation is y = 2 x-8
