Find a number t such that the line passing through the two points has slope -3.
(5, t); (-5, 5)
:
Use the slope formula m =
where
m = -3
x1=5 y1=t
x2=-5; y2=5
:
= -3
= -3
5 - t = -3 * -10
5 - t = 30
-t = 30 - 5
-t = 25
t = -25
:
Find the equation using y - y1 = m(x-x1)
y - (-25) = -3(x-5)
y + 25 = -3x + 15
y = -3x + 15 - 25
y = -3x - 10
You can check this yourself, using the given coordinates for x in the equation
