Question 802184: I have been working on slope in class for the past week and i am totally lost, my teacher just gives me the work and expects me to understand, so I was hoping I could find help through you.
I have been given a slope and a point. I am expected to find the other point. My slope is -5 and my coordinates are (2,8). All i need to do is find the other point through the given information.
FORMULA:
slope= (may be confusing, sorry)
hopefully this was helpful thank you for reading and please reply!?

Answer by josgarithmetic(39615)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Knowing the slope and a point on the line, you can formulate the equation for the line.

Slope is .
Two points, (u,v) and (p,q) have a slope .

Imagine a general point, (x,y) on a line and a known point, (u,v) on the line.
Slope would be . This is equivalent to:

You have a specific example, and a point (2,8) on the line. The equation for this line is , corresponding exactly to the form just derived. This equation is in point-slope form. You can change into slope-intercept form: Solve for y and simplify.
