Question 79676: Can anyone make any sense out of this problem? I don't understand at all the statements about calculus and/or how it would even look or where I would even begin. Any suggestions?
The perimeter = 2L +2W = 400 or L+W = 200
The area = LW so if you substitute for L you get (200-W)W = A
or A = 200W -W^2
If you're allowed to use calculus, you can show easily that the maximum
area occurs when W = 100 which, of course, means that L = 100 and you have a square plot.
If you can't use calculus, you can simply put in a value for W, calculate A, and keep trying until you find the maximum value for A.
Answer by jim_thompson5910(35256) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
If you aren't allowed to use calculus, then you can simply graph the function
Now just use your calculator to find the maximum of the function, which turns out to be at the point
(100,10000)
So the maximum area is 10,000 square units where the width is 100 units
