I turned the last equation into 2x-3y=24, but after that I got lost when I added 2x + 2x = 4x

Rearrange::
2x - y = 16
2x -3y = 24

Subtract and solve for "y":
2y = -8
y = -4
------
Solve for "x":
2x -y = 16
2x + 4 = 16
2x = 12
x = 6
