Question 761894: express y in terms of x in the equation -3x+5y-11=0
Find the point where the line represented by the equation -3x+5y-11=0 cuts the y-axis.Hence check whether the point (3,4) is on the given line.

Given equation:
Problem 1: Express y in terms of x
Step 1: Bring y to side and x and constant terms to the other side of the equation

Step 2: Dividing both sides of step 1 by 5,
------> Equation (1)
The above equation expresses y in terms of x.
Problem 2: Where does the above equation cut the y axis.
For all points the y axis, x = 0. Substituting for x as 0 in the eqn (1)

So the line cuts the y axis at the point (0,11/5)
Problem 3: Is (3,4) on the given line
Solution: To check if (3,4) is on the line, we substitute x as 3 and y as 5 in the line's equation and see if it is true.
i.e.
which is TRUE. So, (3.4) is a point on the given line.

Solved by pluggable solver: DESCRIBE a linear EQUATION: slope, intercepts, etc
Equation describes a sloping line. For any
equation ax+by+c = 0, slope is .
  • X intercept is found by setting y to 0: ax+by=c becomes ax=c. that means that x = c/a. -2.2/0.6 = -3.66666666666667.
  • Y intercept is found by setting x to 0: the equation becomes by=c, and therefore y = c/b. Y intercept is -2.2/-1 = 2.2.
  • Slope is -0.6/-1 = 0.6.
  • Equation in slope-intercept form: y=0.6*x+2.2.
