Question 761563: write an equation of the line that passes through (-2,3) and is perpendicular to the line y=2x+1
Answer by ramkikk66(644) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
First line is y = 2x + 1
It is already of the form y = mx + c where m is the slope.
So slope of the first line = 2.
Therefore, slope of the perpendicular line = -1/2
(product of the slopes of perpendicular lines is -1)
The second line has slope -1/2 and passes through -2,3
Let its equation be y = mx + c where we already know m, and we know 1 set of values for x and y, but don't know c.
So, in the equation for the second line, we can substitute for y, m and x.
Subtracting 1 from either side
So the equation to the second line with m = -1/2, c = 2 is
:)
