There are a few ways to solve this. Let's do substitution.
3x+y=2
x-y=14
Subtract y in the second equation to get:
x=y+14
Plug this into the first equation:
3(y+14)+y=2
Expand:
4y+42 = 2
Subtract 42 and divide by 4 to get:
y=-10
Plug the into the second equation and we know:
x=4
