Two numbers differ by 5,
so if one no is x the other is x-5
one-half of the larger exceeds one-sixth of the smaller by 8
so x/4=(x-5)/6+8
or 3x=2(x-5)+96 multiplying 12 throughout
or 3x=2x-10+96=2x+86
or 3x-2x=86
or x=86
the smaller no=86-5=81
