Answer by ankor@dixie-net.com(22740)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A line contains the points (1, 2) and (a, -4) If the line has the slope m=3,
what is the value of a?
:
we can use the slope formula: = m
assign the given values as follows
x1=1, y1=2
x2=a, y2=-4
m=3
:
so we have:
= 3
Combine the numerator, multiply both sides by the denominator, and you have:
-6 = 3(a-1)
-6 = 3a - 3
-6 + 3 = 3a
-3 = 3a
a = -1
:
:
See if that works
= = +3
