Given; the slope of a straight line is
(1) m1 = -4/7
Q. What is the slope, m2, of a the line perpendicular to this line?
The rule (formula) for the slopes of two perpendicular lines is
(2) m1*m2 = -1
Apply (1) to your problem and get
(3) m1*m2 = -1 or
(4) (-4/7)*m2 = -1 or
(5) m2 = -1*(-7/4) or
(6) m2 = 7/4
Answer: The slope of the line that is perpendicular to a line with slope, -4/7, is 7/4.
PS Another way to remember is that the second slope is the negative inverse of the first slope.
