How do you write equations in standard form.
First, you determine what the standard form is for the equation you are interested in and then you manipulate your equation until it fits the standard form:
Example(1): The standard form for a quadratic equation is:
Ax^2+Bx+C=0
Our equation is:
2x^2+4x=3x+x^2-10 Lets subtract x^2 and 3x from and add 10 to both sides:
2x^2-x^2+4x-3x+10=3x-3x+x^2-x^2-10+10 collect like terms:
x^2+x+10=0-------------------STANDARD FORM
A=1
B=1
C=10
Example(2) The slope-intercept form of a straight line is:
y=mx+b
Where m is the slope and b is the y-intercept
Our equation is:
3y+5=2x-7 subtract 5 from both sides:
3y+5-5=2x-7-5 collect like terms:
3y=2x-12 divide both sides by 3
y=(2/3)x-4-------------------STANDARD FORM
m=2/3
y-intercept=-4
