A chemist has two acid solutions. One contains 15 percent acid and the other contains 6 percent acid. How many cubic centimeters of each solution should be used to obtain 400cm3 of a solution that is 9 percent acid?
------
Equation:
acid + acid = acid
0.15x + 0.06(400-x) = 0.09*400
------
15x + 6*400-6x = 9*400
9x = 3*400
x = (1/3)400
------
x = 133 1/3 cm^3 (amt. of 15% solution needed)
----
400 - x = 266 2/3 cm^3 (amt. of 6% solution needed)
