To master slope, just think about different roofs of houses. Some are
steep and some are not so steep. What is a simple way to describe
"steepness" mathematically? It the familiar (to carpenters)
"rise over run", or, in math terms, y/x. Big y and small x give you
a very steep roof. Small y and big x give you a flatter roof.
A way to think of negative slope is, if you walk up the west side of the roof
that's the + slope. If you walk up the east-facing side, thats the negative
slope.
As for direct variation, just think of the "rise over run" again. The slope
of the roof is the same whether it's expressed as 3/4, 6/8, 12/16.
In math they sasy these numbers are related by a "constant of variation"
so, 3 = 4k, 6 = 8k, 12 = 16k. k is the constant, it's the same in each
case, and this is direct variation. Hope this helps.
