Solve the equation for
, which is to say get
all by itself in the LHS and everything else in the RHS. Once you do that correctly, the coefficient on
will be the slope.

Find the slope: x + 3y = -9
3y = -9 - x
Divide each item by 3
3y/3 = -9/3 - x/3
y = -3 - x/3
Drawing the graph the x and y values are:
(-6,-1)
(-3,-2)
(0,-3)
(3,-4)
(6,-5)
The slope = rise/run = -2/6 = -1/3
The other method to find the slope is:
(y2 - y1)/(x2 - x1)
(-4 - (-3))/(3 - 0)
-4 + 3 = -1
3 - 0 = 3
= -1/3
The Slope: -1/3
