: if the points on a graph are: (3,-1) AND (O,1)what is the slope intercept equation??? i did 1-(-1)/0-3 and got -2/3. my equation so far is y=-2/3x+? how do you know what the slope is?? am i right so far?? This question is from textbook

Answer by josmiceli(19441)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
All you need are some definitions.
slope = (change in y) / (change in x)
y = mx + b is the slope intercept formula
m = slope
b = y-intercept (what y is when x = 0)
If you are given two points, that determines a line,
and a line must have a slope = m.
set up the formula

This is simply slope = slope. The (x,y) in the formula
represents any point also on the line
solving,
multiply through by -1

m = -(2/3) you were right
