parallel means the x and y coefficients are the same, just substitute in the point to find the new constant term

(-9) + (8) = -1 ___ so the new equation is, x + y = -1
___ get the y by itself for slope-intercept ___ y = -x - 1

perpendicular means the slopes are negative reciprocals, so the slope changes from -1 to 1 ___ y = x + b

to find the b term, substitute in the point (again)
___ (8) = (-9) + b ___ 17 = b

so the perpendicular equation is ___ y = x + 17
