Question 53912: Please show me a graph of x + y < 5. Thank you
Answer by funmath(2933) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
I can't really show you this, but I can tell you what it looks like.
x+y<5
Can be graphed like x+y=5 only with a dashed line instead of a solid line because it's not actually equal to that line.
You can plot the x and y intercepts:
For the x intercept, let y=0: x+0=5; x=5. Plot (5,0).
For the y intercept, let x=0: 0+y=5; y=5. Plot (0,5).
Connect the dots with a dashed line.
To figure out where to shade your graph you can use a test point that doesn't fall on the line like (0,0) and plug it into the inequality. If it's true shade the whole area on that side of the line. If not, shade the whole area on the other side of the line.
0+0<5
0<5
0 is less than five so shade the area on that side of the line.
Or you can find out what side of the line to shade by solving the inequality for y, if y< shade below the line, if y> shade above the line
y<-x+5 This means you'd shade below the dashed line.
I can only show you the graph of x+y=5. Imagine that it's dashed and that the area below the line is shaded:
Hope that helped!!!
