Two families drive from Kingston to Niagara Falls. The Maretti family leaves first and travels at an average speed of 85 km/h. The Khan family leaves Kingston once the Maretti family has travelled 40 km, and travels at an average speed of 95 km/h. Determine how far they have travelled when the families have both gone the same distance.
--------------
Maretti family DATA:
rate = 85 km/h ; distance = x -40 km ; time=(x-40)/85 hr.
------
Khan family DATA:
rate = 95 km/h ; distance = x km ; time=x/95
----------
EQUATION:
Time = time
(x-40)/85 = x/95
95x - 3800 = 85x
10x=3800
x=380 km
They have both gone 380 km.

Answer by aaaaaaaa(138) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
hours = x
distance traveled by Maretti - 85x
distance traveled by Khan - 95x
However, we know that the Maretti family has a 40 km lead. So:
So they'll have traveled the same distance after 4 hours (counting from the moment the Khan family left). That is 95*4=380 km traveled.
